Acid Lining

The furnace inner lining, that consists of materials such as sand, silicon-containing rocks, or bricks with silica, which provide acid reaction at operating temperatures.

Additive

(1) A substance added into a solution to change its properties or control the process. Examples: acid baths moisturizers; anti-pitting additives in metals; inhibitors. (2) Any material added to molten metal in a bath or ladle enabling a specific composition of an alloy.

Alloy

A mixture of several components, at least one being a metal.

Arc

Electric current discharge crossing the gap between two electrodes.

Basic Lining

The inner lining and facing of a smelting furnace, that consists of materials such as fired dolomite powder, magnesite, magnesite bricks, or basic slag, which provide base reaction at operating temperatures.

Batcher

A device for automated portioning out (dosing) a specified amount of substance (solid bulks) in a predetermined flow rate within a preset tolerance.

Carbide

A chemical compound of carbon and one or more metallic elements.

Charge [1]

A mixture of starting materials in a specific proportion, processed in metallurgical, chemical, and other units.

Charge [2]

A specific amount of charge materials poured into the furnace at once.
